Interesting new project

From a drawing to reality?
I found this concept Art of a Droid on the net.

Really cool looking Droid, that caught my interest.
When O-LT is done , this might be the next to build...

Drive system

Because it will be a static build, the drives will be only a fake version of chaines like on a tank.
I used foam instead.

Unterlaufen

Ist die Farbe. Unter dem Abklebeband her...sieht shyce aus!

Provisory

Dome paint job

the dome still was in its sandblasted stage of work...
the leg for the big holo was made, the other lenses and whatever these things shall be, will be glued onto the painted surface.

here it is primered in grey:

and the white is applied now too:

Leg Paint work

The legs needed a paintjob too.

While preparing this, i figured out, that i made some wrong.measurements on the chaine cover part...
not good!!

but i will leave it as it.is now and only.change the positions of the paint schemes.

here it is already prepped for the paint job:

Rear Body Paintings

the rear of the body of O-LT will be a miracle.

so i made a design on my own.

this is the result...

not a perfect masking process, but after a heavily weathering process this will be the last thing you will look on!!

Lazy Susan

I cut several ring elements and glued them together. Or i glued them onto the lazy Susan.

Leg paint

There is almost no difference between the light Grey and the creamy White...but anyway i painted the first leg after softly sanding it with fine sanding paper:

Masking time

The body was masked and then painted with the orange rattle can.

After peeling off the masking tape and the paper, it.looks like this:

Colour issues

finding the right colour, can be a big problem!

i went to the local hardware store to find the right orange/red rattle can spray.

no match!
so i decided for a lighter version of it, because i will weather the whole body and the legs afterwards anyway!

New look

above the picture of the once again assembled droid with painted body and light grey primered legs.

the next picture shows you the next work. preparing s ring element for the lazy susan ring bearing, that fits into the dome.

to get this work better done, i quickly built a steel table construction out of square tubings that i had on stock.

New ali center foot sheets

i ordered another set of sheets for the ali center foot.

the first one wasn´t perfect, because there were some areas not cut out on the side sheets. they are not visible at the end, because they are covered, but for maintenance and assembling reasons i will not use this one...well, i think so...

New outer feet sheets

i got a new set of outer feet sheets from my lasercutter.

now i can build a new set...

Body of O-LT

the painted and dried out body of o-lt is mounted provisory the the legs:

pic will follow

the leg to body hubs doesn´t fit perfect, so i have to cut them again a little bit more. i thought that ia had some remains of the required aluminium vinyl on stock, but unfortunately this isn´t so. i have to go to my brother-in-law, that has all kind of vinyls on stock in his enterprise.

Rear leg details

today the rear leg details must be primered; here the first wooden frame part.

the other part is missing somehow...and the two resin parts (under shoulder details) are ready to be primered too!

pic will follow

Filler and Paint job

the body of O-LT got his filler now.

moe some sanding and the white paint can be applied to the surface.

i have chosen RAL 9001, a creamy white. due to the fact, that the body will get an extensive weathering job, i think this is the right choice of color!

Shoulder Strut 2

Here you can see the Strut cut in two halfs.

Under the struts are the shoulder Hubs.

And here everything mounted together:

i welded a smaller in Diameter rod into one of the bigger rods. Here you can see the built together Droid:

The rear of the body

i was thinking of how the rear of the body might look like...

maybe with a power coupling?

the orange painted spots in the front won´t work on the backside.

so there must be another paint scheme or maybe some other small gimmicks. maybe a ventilation port or a coin slot?
well, i don´t know yet...

The rear side of the legs

on the french forum i let the other builders decide which design is the best. and they voted my personal fovorite; this one:

Shoulder strut

i will use a one inch hollow steel rod with end plates in mild steel.

these will be bolted to the legs. Here is the already modified Version of it:

The rod will get the same plate on the other end. Then i will cut it in half.

Shoulder hubs

because i needed some smaller shoulder hubs, that i wanted to have with a conic shape, i found these cups for mixing paint.

Eu
i cut off the not needed material, the i masked them with tape, then followed the roundings of the body with a pencil.

and this is how it looks like in the end:

they will only cover the rod and the end plate, that is fixed to the leg.
for an aluminium look, i will mask them with an aluminium vinyl and glue the bottom of it to the legs inner surface.

Body Work

Next thing is to prepare the body for a primer job. some more sanding is required!

pic will follow

Side details

i fabricated the side details of O-LT´s legs. first step; the side panel. looks like the cover of a kid´s bicycle...fixed here with tape for a first test.

here you can see the finished and glued together parts of it; just like on the picture...at least i hope so...the only pic i have is in such a bad quality!

primered in light grey:

painted in satin black:

Lookin´good!!

Leg Side Detail parts

What appeared to ne as a part from
kids bike, might be right, but spending time to search for.the right Thing, i decided to build IT by Scratch from styrene.

Outer legs for O-LT

The outer legs we're primered now. My neighbor was so kind to do this job for.me.

Aluminium Center Foot

yesterday i found some spare time to build my first ever aluminium center foot!

i got the ali sheets laser cut from on of my customers, a metal shop, that is having a lasercutter as well as a waterjetcutter.

unfortunately there seemed to be an error while they lasercut the parts; two sheets were cut, but one inner section wasn´t cut out as you can see on the pic above.

nothing special for me, so i decided to build this foot for my own full ali r2 droid!

here is a pic of it:

it took me double the time of building this beauty in mild steel due to the time consuming welding process and the warpening of the sheets, that had to be straightenend more than once!!), but in the end almost everything went fine.
i only had to put some special aluminium putty on not so perfect spots on the body like the channel area and one side of the foot.

i will sand it as the next step and add some primer to the surface. one more step in the building process of my full ali r2!!
