Better check my parts that i have on stock ..
there are two different versions of ali skirts used for the film r2´s.
a rounded version and a square version.
to get both versions i let made them from my lasercutter shop.
because skirt number one is almost finished...
i can soon begin on skirt number two...
the last work on the outer ali feet for my buddy frank...
adding small amounts of bondo here and there to get a smooth surface.
same on the super lightweight battery boxes.
then some light grey primering and i am done.
next on the agenda; a next set of lightweight ali outer feet...
The skirts parts are welded together now. and the stripes for the front and rear are cut in length... here taped to the surface...
The last parts arrived and i could start the build of the Ali skirts...
Bending the front and rear sheets...
for the imperial droid we needed another light kit for the dome.
pic will follow
funny thing, that on the french forum a builder offered a set for a good price. i couldn´t resist and bought it immediately.
so the imperial droid we build will probably get an ali dome...or not??!!
it is here finally!
i got a complete ali dome with all panels, plus a periscope kit and some other 3d printed parts for the teeces from manuel from spain!
pic will follow.
the astromech father and son build can continue...
i build a set of ali feet for a buddy of mine.
pic will follow
he gave me in exchange a fiberglass body, two domes and some spare parts in resin and ali.
two acrylic 500 mm domes to build another bb-unit were in this lot too. this can be a bb-9e. the mean black imperial version of bb-8.
so this unit would be great together with the imperial droid i will build with my son.
for the skirt i ordered 36 small stripes in the right dimensions.
so i can finish all three ali skirts. two with the wrong roundings, one with the right square opening.
pics to that later...
The Ali Dome is coming from spain. Today i got a message from Manuel, that he brought the package to the Post Office.
And the acrylic perspex Dome is on his way to me from England.
When i have them here, you will get a pic of them asap!
the skirt dimensions are far from being ok. so the outlet area for the center foot is too small.
it doesn´t fit through the hole.
so i took one of my waterjetcut ali parts i made for a set of two skirts and changed the dimensions with a blue marker.
then again the airsaw was needed to make some place...
here before the work...
Now the foot has enough place:
i made some years ago a set of utility arms in the clone wars version, so the form is completely different...
this could be a cool look of the droid.
normally there is an octagonal hole in the body, where the octagon port has to be.
well, normally...
have a look here...
okay, so again i have to use the airsaw, to get rid of the stuff disturbing me!
Some more or less severe Cracks or broken off Fiberglass Chips have to be repaired on one of the dome...
Certainly not the shape of the Fiberglass body i got from Frank.
So it wasn't his fault, he just got it from another builder long time ago.
I laid an Ali Dome Ring on top of it, seeing that it was far from being round. Here a pic with the Fiberglass dome:
Two Cuts beside the shoulder openings down some Inches with an air saw and an air disc grinder later, i could solve this problem...
With a strap belt all was towed together.
Now some Special glue and some Fiberglass from the inside, plus some putty from the outside, some sanding here and there and this problem is history too!
Frank came along and brought me a bunch of parts...
Two clear acrylic Domes, two Fiberglass Domes, a Fiberglass R2 Body, some Resin parts and some remaining Ali parts from a frame, as well a lazy Susan Ring bearings.
My lasercutter and waterjetcutter made me two Sets of Ali parts for the skirt.
Pic will follow...
But the waterjetcut Part had a small designing error.
There was a curved Line instead of a straight one.
Pic will follow.
I won't throw the Sheets away, so i use it on my droids.
I don't care about this, because it is almost invisible.
But a new Sheet is ordered.
Here you can see the Sheets already rounded with my new machine:
